History of the School

There has been a school on the Bobbin Head Road site for over one hundred years. Originally it was a private boarding college conducted by the Sisters of Mercy for girls from Year 5 to the Leaving Certificate.

Many years ago a Parish Primary School, (Sacred Heart School), was set up in Telegraph Road. After the advent of the Wyndham Scheme, the Secondary and Boarding Schools closed and the Primary Schools joined together and became Mount St Bernard School.

The Kindergarten to Year 2 classes remained at Telegraph Road and Years 3 to 6 classes moved to the Bobbin Head Road site. The Bobbin Head Road property was privately owned by the Sisters of Mercy. The Telegraph Road property was owned by the Sacred Heart Parish, Pymble.

The Sisters of Mercy were not able to retain the large property at Bobbin Head Road because of numerous commitments in the Sydney Archdiocese. It had to be sold and the Pymble Parish was given first option. An extensive building plan was undertaken by the Parish.

The convent was demolished and a new Kindergarten to Year 2 Section was built. The Kindergarten to Year 2 students moved from Telegraph Road in August 1983. Additions and renovations to the Primary Block were carried out at the same time. Mount St Bernard Primary is the Parish School for the Sacred Heart Parish, Pymble.

The 'Mercy' Building was renovated. The ground floor was established as a library. The first floor consists of Administration and Staff areas. The second floor is used by both Parish and the School for various activities and meetings.

In 1987 the Marian Hall was built. This multi-purpose building was used as the temporary Parish Church while the new Church was being constructed in 1991. The Marian Hall is now used for a wide variety of school and Parish functions.

In 2001, the school was renamed as Sacred Heart Catholic School to establish a closer tie between the school and the Sacred Heart Parish.

In 2004 we opened up our new year 5 and 6 buildings and we have had the addition of 2 new demountables and added landscape.
