Playground Rules and Information Written: Term 1 2005, Updated: Term 1 2008, Review: Term 4 2008
Purpose
This policy attempts to ensure the safety of students when on the school playground.
Broad guidelines
• Children are to wear a school hat at all times on the playground.
• Children without hats are to play in a designated shaded area.
• Before school: handball only. No running games.
• Morning tea: handball only, basketball may be played on the basketball court.
• Lunch time: general ball games.
• There is to be no food or drink on the oval.
• No children are to go to classrooms or bags during play times or before school. Children who are not in the Sacred Heart block are allowed to leave their bags outside their classroom. Otherwise school bags will be left in designated areas.
• Play equipment is provided.
• No child is allowed in the gully at any time.
• At the end of recess and lunch children are to assemble on the pavers.
• If wet weather is called before school or during recess or lunch, children are supervised in the classroom.
Before School
1. Children who arrive before 8.20am need to sit on the seats nearest the pavers.
2. The supervising teacher takes the children to the netball court for supervision.
3. Bags are placed in the line up area.
4. On the first bell the children from Kindergarten, Years 1, 2 and 4 assemble on the pavers.
5. Years 3 and 5/6 line up in front of their classrooms.
Recess and Lunch Playground Procedures
Children
1. Children are to sit on the seats to eat their recess and lunch.
2. When this bell sounds children are to be escorted to the bottom playground to be supervised be the teacher on playground duty.
3. At the end of lunch, two buzzers will sound. On the first buzzer the children are to move from their designated play areas, going to the toilet and bubbler before lining up.
4. On the second bell children are to line up in their class lines on the assembly areas.
Teachers
1. Teachers are to take a First Aid Bag to duty.
2. Teachers on morning duty need to be there by 8.20am.
3. Areas need to be clean before the children begin to play.
4. Teachers on duty are not to leave the assembly area until one teacher from each grade is present.
5. Teachers need to ensure they are on time to supervise their class.
6. Children are only sent to the office by the supervising teacher, for major falls, cuts, grazes and head injuries, where they will be attended.
Parents
1. Parents need to be aware that supervision begins at 8.20am.
2. Parents are not to collect children from the playground during recess or lunch, unless they have been to the School Office first to sign them out.
3. Cars are not to move in or out of the school playgrounds during recess or lunch.
Basis of Discretion
The children’s playground is occasionally used as a car park for the Church. Teachers may be called to modify the play areas across the grades. Safety is of utmost importance at all times.
Game preferences may need to be determined by the teacher depending on the weather conditions.
